How Long Does Heroin Stay in Your System?

Heroin Drug Testing

There are many reasons why patients would be interested in drug testing and knowing how long heroin stays in your system. Some patients are working towards making the necessary change to sobriety but need to provide proof to their employers or family that you are making the concentrated effort to remove heroin from their life. Providing a negative test result can help to demonstrate that you are serious about making this positive life change.

Heroin drug testing can be administered in a number of ways. Depending on the specific type of test that is completed it will change the length of time you will need to wait to get the results. There are newer versions of heroin testing that can trace heroin for a longer period of time due to heroin metabolites that are created when your liver tries to process heroin through its system.

Factors That Affect How Long Heroin Stays in Your System

The length of time that heroin will stay in your system will depend on many of your own individual factors including:

  • Height
  • Weight
  • Genetic makeup
  • Your body fat percentage
  • The amount/quantity of heroin you consume
  • Drug quality and components that are in the drug you are taking
  • Your metabolic rate
  • Levels of hydration within your body
  • Your overall health of your liver and kidneys

How Long Heroin Stays in Urine

Drug testing through urine samples is a common form to collect an analysis of heroin within your system. This method of testing often provides patients with only a brief time window of testing as the drugs become easily flushed through your urine and tend to not show up after a prolonged period of time. Typically, patients will test positive for heroin use for up to 2 days after their last dose of heroin. With that said, in some cases, a positive result can occur for up to 7 days depending on the user and their drug history.

How Long Heroin Stays in Blood and Saliva

Typically drug tests for heroin are not conducted through blood and saliva tests. This is due to opioids having a short shelf life within these testing samples. When patients are tested for heroin use using these methods, a positive heroin result will occur for 5-6 hours after the last dose. In some rare cases, there have been positive test results for up to 2 days after the last dose. This makes the window of time to test someone and have it be an accurate depiction challenging. For this reason, this is why a blood or saliva test is not the chosen method to conduct heroin drug testing.

How Long Heroin Stays in Hair Follicles

Hair follicle tests are typically the method of test chosen for heroin drug testing. This is due to the results lasting for a longer period of time than 7 days after the last dose. This method of testing will be able to provide accurate results and depictions of heroin use for up to 3 months after the last dose taken.
