What Is Alcohol Detox Like?
When you first arrive, you will meet with one of our counselors, who will take the time to get to know you by completing admission intake paperwork and assessments. This is when our counselors will understand your relationship with alcohol, including the length of time you have been drinking, the amount you regularly consume, and how often you are drinking in a week. Knowing your drinking patterns will help us formulate a detox plan that will reach your level of need and ensure that your safety is maintained. It is also essential during this time that we learn more about your family history with addiction and any pre-existing medical concerns and presenting mental health concerns. We gather this information to best ensure that your overall well-being and safety are being considered as we create your personalized detox and rehab plans. It is not meant to create any feelings of shame, and we do not judge the information our patients are giving us. It is merely being collected to provide you with an effective detox and rehab plan that will be highly effective for long-term success.
After completing your admission process, you will be able to transition into your alcohol detox program. The Healing Place invites patients to attend our center to detox in our medically supervised detox program. If you are not local to Florida, we will support you in finding transportation to attend our detox program.
As you embark on your alcohol detox, your body will be finding its way to readjust to not having alcohol in its system anymore. When your body is used to regular alcohol consumption, it quickly and easily becomes dependent on alcohol to survive and function. Once alcohol is removed, your body will resist the change and cause unpleasant physiological reactions known as withdrawal symptoms. Some withdrawal symptoms can be mild to moderate, while others have the potential of becoming severe or life-threatening if they are not treated and monitored by a healthcare professional.
Suppose you are someone who has been drinking heavily or consuming large amounts of alcohol for an extended period. In that case, you may experience delirium tremens (DTs) during your alcohol detox. DTs are the most serious symptoms of alcohol withdrawal and, if not treated by medical professionals, can produce dangerous side effects to the user.
If you are experiencing DTs, you must be under the careful supervision of a medical professional to ensure your safety and well-being. If you try to go through DTs yourself, you risk potentially putting yourself in a fatal situation.
How Long Is Detox?
Patients entering alcohol detox will typically begin feeling withdrawal symptoms approximately 8 hours after their last drink. These symptoms will generally be mild to moderate. By day three, usually, patients will hit the peak of their withdrawal symptoms and experience the more severe symptoms of their alcohol withdrawal. This period will often last until day seven, when your symptoms will begin to subside, and you will start to regain your health and strength again. In some cases, patients have experienced alcohol withdrawal for up to ten days. Your detox time will depend on your history of alcohol use and will be unique to your specific relationship with your addiction.
What Happens After Detox?
Once you feel healthy and stable, you will move into an alcohol rehab program. Removing alcohol from your body is the first step in recovery, as alcoholism is a disease that affects your mind, body, and soul. Detox targets healing your physical needs by removing alcohol from your body. Alcohol rehab will look after healing you mentally and emotionally from the pains of addiction. You will have the option of participating in alcohol rehab for 30, 60, or 90 days depending on your level of need. During this time, you will engage in the many evidence-based treatment modalities offered within The Healing Place to help you identify the root causes of your addiction and heal from those deep-rooted emotions within. As you emotionally begin to recover from the depths of your addiction, our counselors will work with you to learn the skills needed for relapse prevention and effective emotional regulation. Life will still have highs and lows in recovery, but the critical piece is that you have the tools to handle any challenges and remain sober.
What Drugs Are Used In Detox?
Alcohol withdrawal can bring up uncomfortable or unpleasant side effects and, for some, these symptoms can be why there are challenges completing detox. For those patients that require additional support, you may be offered medications to help ease the severity of your symptoms and reduce any strong urges for alcohol.
Medications that are typically offered for patients in alcohol detox are:
- Acamprosate: Given to patients with long-term alcohol addiction. This medication can help reverse some of the damage done to your brain during your active addiction. It also helps to reduce cravings and lessen anxiety, depression, or feelings of restlessness.
- Benzodiazepines: Helps reduce any anxiety feelings, keep you relaxed, and enable you to sleep better.
- Naltrexone: This helps reduce cravings for alcohol and supports relapse prevention as it can cause individuals to become sick if they were to drink again.
